I have a pretty basic example on how to create a custom widget which can talk to the input method system in Gtk+, more specifically, in Maemo Gtk+. In this example, I create a new widget derived from GtkWidget and this widget can receive input from the Hildon Input Method. It can receive the input either from the stylus input method such as the virtual keyboard or from the Finger Keyboard.

It doesn't show anything in GUI but it prints in stderr of what you typed there using the Hildon Input Method. After you master this you can continue to create a more complex widget e.g. the web browser or any widget you want which requires input method.

Expect this to be in the online stores in mid November. The good news is that the N800 owners can use the same operating system so don't worry about it.

After running the UME as root, finally I could get my environment working again, dunno why :-)

And the bottom part of the browser is clipped, well that text on the browser are typed using hardware keyboard. HIM is not yet working there. Feel free to make Firefox to work with HIM :-)

As promised in GUADEC, today we release the Hildon Input Method (The HIM) suite.

The components released are:
* Hildon Input Method Framework: This is the glue to the GUI framework, consists of the protocol and the HildonIMContext
* Hildon Input Method UI: This is the main UI which hosts all the plugins.
* Hildon Input Method Plugins Example: This is already released in Maemo Bora but now we also moved the source code repository outside.

Just like other Hildon projects, it also runs not only in Maemo platforms. Sorry my Ubuntu Mobile environment is a bit broken so no screenshot for today :-) But packages for UME are here,

I have updated the RTL howto in Maemo wiki and provided two sets of patch to Hildon Desktop and Hildon Widgets. Jobi applied my patch and now I just wait for MDK to apply it too :-)

If you're a native or at least use RTL languages in your everyday life please test my patches throughly.

This is my GUADEC 2007 report. I just put some summaries in the areas I interested in:

Input Methods
I presented my lightning talk about the Hildon Input Method (slides available here). I explained the architecture of Hildon Input Method and threw some ideas to extend it. Then I saw the lowfat demo and I think Hildon Input Method could be used there. And also Ross Burton of OpenedHand showed his interests in his mail. I also had a tiny discussion with Alp Toker of Collabora to get the input method working in Webkit in Maemo.

Many people ask for the ability to change the time formatting from 12 to 24 hours (and vice versa) in Nokia 770 and N800. Currently there is no easy solution :(

However, there is a hacker way to accomplish this. Follow the mini HOWTO I wrote yesterday, as requested by Quim, to edit and rebuild the posix-locales data. Of course, this is not enough. Let's hope that there will be some sort of one click way doing this in the future.
